The Sustainability Research Effectiveness (SRE) Program’s investigation of research effectiveness received nomination for an Ashoka Innovation Award. Ashoka selected our submission as a semi-finalist for the Ashoka Innovation Award under the Research category. Dr. Brian Belcher will attend the Ashoka Exchange conference in Boston in April 2018. There, he will co-host a session on the topic of multi-sector collaboration for interdisciplinary research.

Our program aims to improve the way research contributes to change to make research more effective. The idea emerged from Brian’s experience as a scientist working in an international research-for-development context. Funders wanted evidence of impact to demonstrate accountability. Researchers wanted better ways to evaluate their research to support learning to know what worked and how to improve it. The lack of tools to assess the kinds of contributions applied research made in complex systems led Brian to start the SRE program. Borrowing ideas from development evaluation, we developed our own approach to assess research design, implementation, and outcomes in terms of social change. We apply and test these tools in case studies and reflect on our own research effectiveness.
